Built to withstand the toughest marine environments--including always-wet ski and wakeboarding boats--Polk Audio's DB 570 coaxial speakers offer topnotch performance and durability at a wallet-pleasing price. Each oval speaker is outfitted with a 5-by-7-inch, dynamic-balanced, polymer/mica composite cone woofer/midrange that's stiff yet lightweight, resulting in a big sound with little distortion. The 0.75-inch liquid-cooled silk/polymer composite dome tweeters with neodymium magnets, meanwhile, deliver clear, detailed highs that soar above the whines of a boat or car engine. Also along for the ride are low-mass, two-layer Kapton voice coils that produce a high sound output and robust power handling, along with durable Butyl rubber surrounds that won't fall apart under the stress of extreme temperatures, long exposure to sunlight, or the rigors of time.

Installation is abetted by the polarized, nickel-plated terminals on the PCB terminal board, which ensure simple yet secure wire connections. And though the marine certification makes the speakers a particularly good choice for seafaring listeners, the speakers also fit comfortably in cars, trucks, and other vehicles.

Listeners with finely tuned ears will dig the speakers' high- and low-pass crossovers, which deliver clearer, more accurate midrange frequencies and glare-free highs. The crossovers give the DB 570s more natural imaging than other speakers in this class, most of which use single-stage, high-pass-only filters.

The DB 570s, which offer a frequency response of 52 Hz to 22 kHz and a peak power handling of 180 watts, require a mounting cutout of 4.9 by 7.1 inches at a depth of up to 2.56 inches. They're also backed by a one-year warranty.

I hooked these up to an older Sony head unit in my quarter century old Toyota 4runner. Even without an external amplifier they sound good even at higher volumes. I listen to a wide variety of eclectic music as well as talk radio and the speakers handled it all just fine. I am not crazy about the high profile grill because they are a bit of a thief magnet, particularly with the top off the 4runner. Thankfully nothing has happened yet. Recommended.
